Re/Jacques advance to Southern Intercollegiate quarterfinal

ATHENS, Ga. - Virginia Tech had one doubles team advance on the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships being played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus. Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada)/Yoann Re (Jr, Verdun, Quebec, Canada) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win over Array/Johannsen (Armstrong Atlantic State). The AASU duo are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in NCAA Division II.

The Hokies were not as successful in singles as both Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain) and Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) were eliminated in the Division I bracket. Jacques lost in the Round of 32 to 39th-ranked Reid Carleton (Duke), 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, while Delgado de Robles lost in the Round of 16 versus 33rd-rankded Guillermo Gomez (Georgia Tech). Elsewhere Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) and Jon Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) both won matches in the Division II bracket before being eliminated in the Round of 16.C

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Luka Somen advanced to the finals in the A1 singles Saturday at the Steve Baras Collegiate Fall Classic being held at the Champions Club. Two other Hokies dropped their semifinals while another advanced to a consolation final.

Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Crotia) defeated Scott Robertson (Jacksonville State) 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, and will play Andrey Bubnov (UNC Greensboro) in Sunday's final. Two other Hokies were not as fortunate as Corrado Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost his A2 semifinal, 1-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, against Rodrigo Amaral (Belmont) while Eduardo Pinto lost 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, in the B2 semifinals.

Zach Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) won two matches Saturday in the B1 consolation bracket. Pine defeated Chapman Mitchell (Mercer), 6-2, 6-1, then defeated Stefan Solomon (Jacksonville, State), 7-6 (4), 6-1. He will face Fernando Armendaris (Mercer) in Sunday's final.

In doubles action, Pine/Pinto won two matches to advance to the A2 Doubles final Sunday against Amaral/Lima (Belmont). Somen/Tocci lost their A1 competition quarterfinal, 8-6, to Ewels/Moser (UAB).
