Tech completes weekend sweep with 5-2 win over Miami
No. 20 Hokies improve to 10-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team followed up a 5-2 win on Friday over No. 22 Florida State with a solid 5-2 victory aginst No. 49 Miami Sunday afternoon at the Burleson-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies improved 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes fell to 6-8 and 0-5 in the conference.

Tech, ranked No. 20 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, won two of the three doubles contests to take the first point of the day, then won four of the six singles matches for the victory.

After winning the doubles point, the Hokies won the first three completed singles matches to clinch the victory. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) took the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-0, over Waylon Chin and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) won his No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-3, against Keith Crowley. Tech clinched the victory at No. 1 as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 51 nationally, defeated Christian Blocker, 6-4, 6-1.

In other singles results, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 67, defeated Carl Sundberg, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (6), Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) lost a tough, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, No. 4 match against David Simon and Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 107, was upset, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (12), by Ignacio Taboda in the No. 6 match.

In doubles, Somen/Tocci took the No. 3 match, 8-3, over Barnabas Correga/Sundberg, then the Hokies clinched the doubles point as Jacques/Re upset 53rd-ranked Crowley/Hector Niego, 8-3. Miami took the No. 1 contest when Beck/Daciek lost, 8-6, to Blocker/Simon.

Tech will be back in action on Friday, April 2, when play at No. 24 Duke.
