Men's tennis falls to Duke, 6-1

DURHAM, N.C. – The 18th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis squad lost to 27th-ranked Duke on Friday in Durham, N.C., 6-1, as sophomore Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci recorded the Hokies’ point on the day in an impressive victory.

The Blue Devils won the first three singles matches and, coupled with the doubles point, sealed the match early. At No. 1 singles, 11th-ranked Henrique Cunha dropped senior Yoann Re (Verdun Quebec, Canada), ranked 38th in the nation, 6-2, 6-2. Duke’s Reid Carleton beat sophomore and 61st-ranked Luka Somen (Karlovac, Croatia), 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles , and junior and 117th-ranked Sebastian Jacques (Magog Quebec, Canada) lost to Luke Marchese at No. 6 singles to secure the match for the Blue Devils.

Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Reggio Emilia, Italy) scored the Hokies lone win on the day in a strong effort. Tocci won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, over the 87th-ranked Dylan Arnould of Duke in the No. 3 singles contest. Junior Will Beck (Potomac, Md.) fought hard but fell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, to David Holland at No. 5 singles, while sophomore Patrick Daciek (Severna Park, Md.) came up just short against Torsten Wietoska, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

Duke wasted no time in capturing the doubles point winning a pair of 8-2 bouts at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Carleton/Cunha, ranked third in the nation as a tandem, defeated Beck/Daciek at No. 1 doubles, while the 74th-ranked Re/Jacques duo fell to Duke’s 80th-ranked Arnould/Holland. Somen/Tocci defeated the Blue Devils’ Michel/Wietoska, ranked 63rd, 7-6, after the doubles point was already decided.

Tech travels to Chapel Hill on Sunday for a bout with No. 20 North Carolina at 1 p.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
