Tech downs No. 33 NC State, 5-2
Hokies claim doubles and four singles matches in win
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 63 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated No. 33 NC State, 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. Tech improves to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the ACC while the Wolfpack drops to 15-6 and 1-4 in the league.
Tech got out to a 1-0 lead, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. The Hokies’ 47th-ranked duo of Luka Somen
and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci defeated the State tandem of Julian Sullivan and Sean Weber, 8-6 in the No. 1.
The Hokies increased their lead to 2-0 as No. 123 Lucas Oliveira
defeated Robbie Mudge, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles. NCSU got on the board in the next completed match with a win in the No. 4 singles to cut the Tech lead down to 2-1.
Somen had a big win in the No. 1 singles to give the Hokies a 3-1 lead in the match. Tech’s No. 119 Somen downed the 35th-ranked player, Jaime Pulgar in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-4.
The deciding match was the No. 5 where Tocci battled against Sullivan to three sets. Tocci won the opening set 7-6(5), but Sullivan came back strong in the second set for a 6-3 win. In the final set, Tocci claimed the 7-5 decision and the point needed for the team win.
Kujundzic also picked up a point for the Hokies with a three set win in the No. 6 singles. After faltering 6-4 to State’s Ivan Sanchez Gomez in the opening set, Kujundzic rallied back to take sets two and three with scores of 6-4, 6-1, respectively.
Tech will host Wake Forest
on Sunday in a 2 p.m. match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The time of this match has been changed from the original 3 p.m. start time.
