Hokies open season at 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiates
Men's tennis to compete in nation's oldest fall collegiate tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will kick off the 2012-13 schedule, traveling to the University of Georgia for the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, Sept. 7-10 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. First round matches will begin on Friday with the flight championships being held on Monday.

The tournament will feature as many as three singles divisions and two doubles divisions with champions to be named in each. In addition, there will be at least two rounds of singles consolation matches.

The Hokies entire roster will be traveling to Athens, Ga. to compete with junior Lucas Oliveira leading the Hokies this season after playing in No. 2 spot last spring. Virginia Tech also returns senior Trpimir Kujundzic and sophomores Mauricio Antun, Hunter Koontz and Marko Lovrinovic.

Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini and Aaron Gomez will make their first road trips as Hokies this weekend as the newcomers try to fill voids left by 2012 graduates Luka Somen, Patrick Daciek and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci.

Other participants in the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament include Armstrong Atlantic, The Citadel, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, Mercer, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Florida, Presbyterian, UT Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech and Vanderbilt.

Tech will face a challenging weekend as the tournament features five teams that finished in the top 15 in the nation last year. The highest finisher was host team Georgia, who finished at No. 5.
