ATHENS, Ga. – Freshman Andreas Bjerrehus defeated Clemson’s preseason 32nd-ranked Yannick Maden in three sets to advance on the second day of competition at the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga.

Bjerrehus defeated Maden in the Division I singles draw. The Hokie freshman took the opening set 6-4, but Maden came back for a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set was back and forth, but Bjerrehus held on for the 7-5 win.

The Tech freshman also won his second match of the day in the round of 16 against Liberty’s Siim Tuus. Bjerrehus defeated the Flames’ athletes in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-1. With the win, Bjerrehus advance to the quarterfinals of the flight.

In the Division I singles consolation bracket Tech’s Mauricio Antun downed Kentucky’s Beck Pennington in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-3.

Tech also had wins in the Division II singles flight as freshman Aaron Gomez claimed a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Mercer’s Austin Emmet.

Trpimir Kujundzic downed North Florida’s Mark Hammill, 6-2, 6-3. Tech’s Hunter Koontz outlasted UNF’s Leonardo Nahar. Koontz took the first set 6-2, but Nahar came back in the second for a 6-2 win. Koontz shut out the Osprey 6-0 to secure the match and advance.

In the round of 16 of the Division II singles, Gomez defeated Clemson’s Ayerton Wibowo in a three set battle. The Tigers’ player claimed the first set 7-6(4), but Gomez came back to win the next two 6-2, 6-1.

Koontz also had a win in the round of 16, defeating Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rackitt in three sets. After taking the opening set 7-5, Koontz faltered 6-4 in the second before coming back for the 6-4 win in the final set. Gomez and Koontz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II flight.

Doubles matches were moved to Sunday at 8:30 a.m. In addition all consolation matches that were not completed on Saturday will also be played on Sunday.
