ATHENS, Ga. – Sophomore Hunter Koontz claimed a pair of wins for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team on Sunday at the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championship to advance to Monday’s flight finals.
Koontz had a win in the quarterfinals of the Division II flight, defeating Tobi Menhofer of Kennesaw State in three sets. After faltering in the opening set 7-5, Koontz came back to take the next two with scores of 6-2, 6-4.
In the semifinals Koontz downed Armstrong Atlantic’s Jaan Kononov in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(5). He will face the Citadel’s David Orces in the finals.
After defeating the 32nd-ranked player on Saturday, freshman Andreas Bjerrehus picked up another big win during Sunday’s competition in the Division I quarterfinals. Bjerrehus defeated No. 17 Bob van Overbeek of Florida with straight set scores of 7-6(4), 6-1. The Hokie freshman fell in the semifinals to Georgia’s 36th-ranked Hernus Pieters, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, the Tech duo of Mauricio Antun and Amerigo Contini defeated Georgia’s Casey Kay and Will Oliver, 8-2 in the round of 16 of the Division II doubles flight. The Hokies’ pair picked up a second win on Sunday with a 9-7 win over North Florida’s Julien Belair and Moritz Buerchner. The pair moves into the semifinal round.
The tournament will conclude on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. with the singles finals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
