    Tech men's tennis off to solid start at ITA Atlantic Regionals

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team got off to a strong start during the opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regionals, picking up wins in singles and doubles to advance in tournament play in Charlottesville, Va.

    Tech’s Marko Lovrinovic secured a win against Georgetown’s Dan Khanin in a three set battle. After faltering in the opening set, 6-4, Lovrinovic came back to claim sets two and three with scores of 6-2, 6-0. In the next round, Lovrinovic will go up against Penn State’s Bryan Welnetz.

    Freshman Aaron Gomez also picked up a first round win, defeating Paul Nahon of Richmond in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Gomez advances to play Ben Guthrie of William & Mary in Saturday’s second round.

    Five Hokies received opening round byes in singles and will begin competition on Saturday. Opening singles will be No. 96 Lucas Oliveira as he faces Longwood’s Harry Kelleher. Andreas Bjerrehus will play Aaron Chaffee of William & Mary while Amerigo Contini squares off against Shane Korber of Georgetown. Mauricio Antun and Hunter Koontz will also play Georgetown competitors, facing Reese Milner and Charlie Caris, respectively.

    In doubles, Gomez and Oliveira paired up for an 8-5 win over Siim Tuus and Jorge Azuero of Liberty. The Tech duo moves on to face Old Dominion’s Carlos Lopez-Villa and Albert Ochagavia.

    Bjerrehus and Contini downed George Mason’s duo of Danny Naja and Aaron Capitel, 8-2. In the next round, Tech will play Ethan Dunbar and Sebastien Fauchet of Richmond.

    Rounding out the wins in doubles was the tandem of Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic that paired up for an 8-5 decision against Jordan Dyke and Tanner Baine also of Mason. The pair advances to face Temple’s Kacper Rams and Kristian Marquart.

    Competition continues on Saturday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. Play will resume at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
