    Tech continues strong play at ITA Atlantic Regionals

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued their strong run on Saturday during the third day of the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.

    Freshman Andreas Bjerrehus continues his strong fall for the Hokies, picking up a pair of wins to advance. He defeated William & Mary’s Aaron Chaffee in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1. In the next round, Bjerrehus defeated Wesley Barrett of Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-3. Bjerrehus advances to face Siim Tuus of Liberty in Sunday’s round of 16.

    Fellow freshman Amerigo Contini advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Shane Korber of Georgetown. Contini followed that up by defeating William & Mary’s John Banks, 6-4, 6-2. Contini will play UVa’s Ryan Shane in the next round.

    Sophomore Hunter Koontz also moved on to the round of 16. He secured a 6-2, 6-3 win over Charlie Caris of Georgetown before defeating VCU’s Michal Voscek in a tough three sets. After faltering in the opening set, 7-5, Koontz came back to win the next two, 7-5, 6-4. Koontz moves on to face UVa’s Harrison Richmond on Sunday.

    Bjerrehus and Contini paired up in doubles for an 8-6 win over Richmond’s Ethan Dunbar and Sebastien Fauchet. The pair moves into the round of 16 to play George Washington’s pair of Alex Van Gills and Ulrik Thomsen.

    Koontz paired up with Trpimir Kujundzic in doubles for an 8-4 decision over Temple’s Kacper Rams and Kristian Marquart. The Hokie tandem advances and will face Russell Bader and Roman Trkulja of Penn State on Sunday.

    Sunday’s matches are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. with the round of 16 singles. The round of 16 and quarterfinals will be played in doubles.
