CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opened up the UVA Ranked+1 with a strong showing on Friday, advancing in both singles and doubles during the opening day at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Bjerrehus, who is ranked 66th in the ITA, was seeded third in the orange singles flight. He opened the tournament with a straight set win over VCU’s Jean Baptiste Mateo with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
In the second round, Bjerrehus downed No. 122 Sidharta Hazarika of Binghamton, 6-2, 6-2.
Contini is the No. 1 seed in the white singles flight and is currently ranked 43rd in the ITA. In the opening round, Contini defeated Kentucky’s Ryiugi Hirooka in three sets. After falling in the opening set 4-6, Contini rallied to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The Tech sophomore followed that up with a straight set win in the second round, defeating Sean Weber of NC State, 6-1, 6-3.
Junior Hunter Koontz defeated Louisville’s 47th ranked Sebastian Stiefelmeyer in the opening round of the white flight. After falling in the first set, 3-6, Koontz responded to take the next two sets with scores of 6-4, 6-1. The Hokie player fell in the second round to host-team UVa’s JC Aragone, 6-1, 7-6.
Koontz and Bjerrehus teamed up in the red flight, but had a first round bye and will take to the court on Saturday against the UVA pair of Ryan Shane and Jonny Cornish.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 21 beginning at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles at the Snyder Tennis Center.
