BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Friday in the opening rounds of the singles and doubles main draws at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies advanced two in singles and a pair in doubles.
Nicoud defeated Liberty’s Egon Samaai in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1. The Tech player moves on to play VCU’s 55th-ranked and fifth-seeded Alexis Heugas in the second round.
Gomez picked up the win over Rich Robbie of Duquesne, 6-2, 6-4. Gomez advances to the second round to face ODU’s 59th-ranked and sixth-seeded Carlos Lopez Villa.
In doubles, Nicoud paired up with Jai Corbett for an 8-2 win over Saint Joseph’s pair of Jose Sierra and Dan Barrus. The Tech duo will face VCU’s sixth-seeded pair of Alejandro Argente and Jean Baptiste Mateo.
On the court for the first time this week in singles, Tech’s 14th-seeded Koontz is set to play Longwood’s Dan Elston while Joao Monteiro will square off against UMBC’s Alex Drean. Jai Corbett will meet Richmond’s Alex Hahn in the second round.
Tech’s Contini, the No. 2 seed in the event, will face Navy’s Austin Jones. Seventh-seeded Bjerrehus is set to match up against JMU’s Rob Stirling.
On the doubles side, Koontz and Monteiro will team up as the seventh-seeded pair to play Nika Dolidze and Marc Collado Castells from Penn State. Tech’s 17th-ranked and second-seeded duo of Contini and Bjerrehus will play Radford’s Joe Mills and Javier Waase.
The second rounds will get started on Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles. A round of singles will follow with a second round of doubles to be played after at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
