Tech advances in singles and doubles at ITA Regionals
Hokies move in to singles' quarterfinals and doubles' semifinals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up day four of competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional with Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro advancing to the quarterfinals in singles while two Tech pairs move on to the doubles’ semifinals at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies’ 66th-ranked Bjerrehus defeated Delaware’s Adam Lawton 6-3, 6-3 in the first singles match of the day. Bjerrehus followed that up with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Danil Zelenkov of George Washington to advance in to Monday’s quarterfinal round. Bjerrehus will face another GW player in that round, squaring off against No. 94 Francisco Dias.

Monteiro also picked up a pair of wins on Sunday. In the first match, Monteiro defeated VCU’s Alejandro Argente in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2. In the next round, Monteiro downed George Washington’s 70th-ranked Nikita Fomin, 6-1, 6-4. Monteiro will face UVA’s 46th-ranked Ryan Shane in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, 17th-ranked Amerigo Contini and Bjerrehus paired up to defeat George Washington’s Danil Zelenkov and Nikita Fomin, 8-7(7).

Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud also advanced in doubles on an injury walkover against UVA’s Justin Shane and Harrison Richmond.

The two Virginia Tech pairs will face each other in Monday’s semifinal round.

The Hokies’ 43rd-ranked Contini picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mike Reilly of Penn State but fell in the next round to UVa’s Jordan Daigle 6-3, 6-4.

Hunter Koontz also picked up a singles win on Sunday, defeating Penn State’s Alex Fennell in a three set battle. After falling in the first set 7-5, Koontz rallied back for 6-3, 6-3 wins in the next two. Koontz faltered against UVA’s 20th-ranked Mac Styslinger, the top-seeded player in the tournament, 6-0, 6-1 to round out the day’s singles matches.

Matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. with doubles at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Quarterfinals and semifinals of singles will follow.
