Former Tech and current Carolina Panthers linebacker James Anderson will be visiting three elementary schools in his hometown of Chesapeake, Va., on Friday, May 4, to distribute summer reading books to first-graders.

The visit is part of Anderson’s new literacy initiative entitled “Read Like a Pro.” He is teaming up with Scholastic Inc., the global children’s publishing, education and media company, to promote the importance of reading and literacy, and to help the schools he has “adopted” tackle the summer reading slide. In addition to providing books to first-grade students, Anderson will read aloud to the students and talk to them about how literacy and reading affected his life and got him to where he is today.

When students don’t read over the summer, teachers typically need 4 to 6 weeks in the fall to re-teach material students have forgotten. What researchers call the “summer slide” in reading skills is a major concern for educators and is responsible for the majority of the achievement gap between children from middle class and low-income families. Children from low-income families are less likely to have access to books at home.

Anderson played at Tech from 2002-05. In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Panthers selected Anderson in the third round, and he has been with the team ever since. Last year, he finished with 145 tackles, two interceptions and 1.5 sacks. In 2010, he recorded 130 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception.

In July of last year, the Panthers rewarded Anderson for his steady play, signing him to a five-year contract worth $22 million, $8.5 of which was guaranteed.

On April 16, 2007, tragedy struck the Virginia Tech campus when a disturbed gunman took the lives of 32 people. In the days, weeks, months and years since then, a nation provided prayers, thoughts, sympathy and support to those in the Blacksburg community. A lot of those came from the sports world, where many expressed their thoughts in countless ways.

This April marks the five-year anniversary of the tragedy. Here is a column by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, published two days after the shootings, that captured the spirit of the Virginia Tech community. Please take time to read this, as a campus and community remembers those lost and injured.

Katie Baer, a Virginia Tech athletics trainer, will be coordinating a university event entitled “Women in Sports Medicine” that will be held March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bowman Room on the fourth floor of Tech’s Jamerson Athletics Center.

Speakers will include:

• Stephanie Aldret – Her topic will be the manipulation for practitioner-patient mismatch, and the importance of appropriate table height, mechanics and technique

• Baer – Her discussion will center on women in the athletics training room – perceptions and reality.

• Jenn McCrady – Her topic is on how to relate to the male athlete from a rehab/medical provider aspect.

• Jennie Schafer – She will discuss how to use a healthy lifestyle to portray confidence and stand out

• Bridget McSorley – Her discussion will be on networking and athletics career opportunities for a woman with a family.

• Renee Selberg-Eaton – Her topic focuses on females in a male-dominant setting – how to communicate and make connections to male patients.

Bob Liebau, a former Tech student who worked as a graduate assistant in the athletic training department with legendary trainer Eddie Ferrell, was named the 2012 Clinical and Emerging Practice Athletic Trainer of the Year by The Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association. He received the award at the VATA’s annual meeting and symposium in Richmond on Jan. 14.

Liebau has worked at the University of Mary Washington for the past 25 years and currently serves as the Associate Director of Campus Recreation and the Director of the Fitness Center at Mary Washington. He graduated from Tech in 1979 with an undergraduate degree in health and physical education. He received a master’s in physical education, specializing in exercise physiology, from Tech in 1985.

From 1982-84, he worked with Ferrell, helping with the football team under then coach Bill Dooley and the wrestling team under then coach Jerry Cheynet.

Former Virginia Tech quarterback Bruce Arians decided to retire from coaching after a long and successful career at many different stops.

Arians, who played at Tech from 1972-74, most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers – a job he had held since 2007 when current Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin took over as the head coach. Arians had served as the receivers coach for the Steelers from 2004-06. During his time with the Steelers, he was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams (2005 and 2008).

Arians also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and with the Indianapolis Colts. In 2001-03, he served as the Browns offensive coordinator, while in 1998-2000, he worked as the Colts quarterbacks coach.

His first work as an NFL assistant came in 1989 when he was named the Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach. Prior to that, he worked at three different colleges – Mississippi State (running backs and receivers coach, 1978-80), Alabama (running backs coach, 1981-82) and Temple (head coach, 1983-88). Temple went 21-45 during his tenure.

For his career, he has worked for five NFL teams and three colleges, including twice working at both Mississippi State (1978-80 and 1993-95) and Alabama (1981-82 and 1997).

After he graduated from Tech, he worked as a graduate assistant for two years.

The Virginia Tech football program will welcome three new members to its program when it re-convenes Tuesday evening for a team meeting to begin preparing for the 2012 season. Those three players are two recent high school graduates: running back J.C. Coleman and defensive back Donaldven Manning, along with 2011 signee Dewayne Alford. All three began classes Tuesday at Tech.

Alford, a projected defensive end from Nansemond River High in Suffolk, Va., signed with Tech last February and deferred his enrollment to this semester. He was listed as the No. 30 player in Virginia last year by The Roanoke Times.

Coleman played at Oscar Smith High in Chesapeake, Va., helping lead his team to a state title just last month. He is ranked as the No. 4 all-purpose back in the country and the No. 5 prospect in Virginia by Rivals after rushing for 1,488 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior despite missing three games with an ankle injury. Manning (first name pronounced Donovan) played at Miami Central High in Miami, Fla., and is listed as the No. 23 cornerback in the country and the No. 42 player in Florida by Rivals.

Because both Coleman and Manning are enrolling in January, neither will sign a National Letter of Intent. Alford’s NLI from 2011 was still binding. Signing Day is Wednesday, Feb. 1 this year.

Three former Virginia Tech football players, all from the AFC, will be on active rosters in the upcoming playoffs in search of a Super Bowl title.

Tech had four on active rosters going into the playoffs. The four from the AFC on active rosters, are the following:
Pittsburgh: Jason Worilds
Denver: Eddie Royal
Baltimore: Tyrod Taylor
Houston: Duane Brown

Baltimore (Taylor) will host the Texans (Brown) this weekend the Broncos (Royal) travel to play the Patriots.

Rashad Carmichael (Houston) and Josh Morgan (San Francisco) are on the injured reserve of their respective teams.

Here is a look at the postgame depth chart from the ACC title game game. The number before the slash indicates plays from scrimmage, while the number after the slash indicates plays from special teams. The number of plays, the grades and the tackles came from the coaching staff.

NEW ORLEANS – The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has named eight quarterbacks as its “Stars of the Week.” College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 9 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Player of the Week.

VOTE HERE!

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

This week’s eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Austin Davis, Southern Miss
(20-of-22, 284 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT)
Davis directs touchdown drives on nine of 13 attempts and runs for a touchdown while setting a school-record for completion percentage in leading the Golden Eagles to a 63-35 blowout of Navy to improve to 5-1.

Zac Dysert, Miami (Ohio)
(24-of-37, 342 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT)
Dysert comes to life for the RedHawks, closing the game with three straight touchdowns as Miami erases a 28-14 deficit to pick up their first win of the year, 35-28, over Army.

Landry Jones, Oklahoma
(31-of-50, 367 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
Jones picks apart the defense of the 11th-ranked team in the nation, registering his fourth 350-yard game of the year as the Sooners crush Texas, 55-17, in the Red River Rivalry.

Andrew Luck, Stanford
(26-of-33, 370 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT)
Luck throws for a season-high 370 yards and three more touchdowns in just over three quarters of action to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 13 with a 48-7 win over Pac-12 newcomer Colorado.

Connor Shaw, South Carolina
(26-of-39, 311 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT)
Making his second career start, Shaw completes 26-of-39 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns as South Carolina posts its largest-ever margin of victory in an SEC game.

Geno Smith, West Virginia
(27-of-45, 449 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT)
Smith tallied his second 400-yard game of the year as he lifts the Mountaineers after a slow start with a 23-point third quarter on route to a 43-16 win over UConn.

Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech
(23-of-25, 310 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
Thomas has the best game of his young career, recording his first 300-yard game and setting a completion percentage record for the Frank Beamer-era, while also running for a pair of scores, including the go-ahead TD with 56 seconds to go, in a thrilling 38-35 ACC win over Miami.

Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State
(24-of-28, 289 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT)
Weeden engineers a massive blowout of conference-foe Kansas, playing less than one half of football and throwing for five touchdowns and 289 yards with just four incompletions, leading the Cowboys to a 56-7 halftime advantage.

Last week’s Manning Award Player of the Week was Washington State senior Marshall Lobbestael. A native of Oak Harbor, Wash., he completed 32-of-49 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a 31-27 victory Colorado. Two of the three touchdowns occurred in the final three minutes, including a 63-yard game-winning connection. It was the second time that Lobbestael had been recognized as a Manning Award Star of the Week and his first Manning Award Player of the Week honor.

The Manning Award will be recognizing its eighth winner this year. USC’s Matt Leinart was the inaugural winner of the award in 2005, followed by Texas’ Vince Young in 2006. Both went on to be top 10 NFL draft picks. In 2007, LSU’s JaMarcus Russell earned the award and was the NFL’s No. 1 draft pick. Boston College’s Matt Ryan claimed the award in 2008 and was drafted No. 3, quickly becoming the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. In 2009, Florida star Tim Tebow earned the honor – he also went on to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The 2010 winner was Texas signal-caller Colt McCoy, the winningest quarterback in college football history, who was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the draft. Last year saw Auburn’s Cameron Newton earn the award, prior to being selected No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
