Tech football player Ernest Wilford has been named the athletics department student-athlete of the
month for the month of August/September.
This honor goes to the Tech athlete who volunteers the most time for
community outreach programs as part of the HiTOPS/Champs Life Skills
Programs coordinated through the Student Life office at Tech.
During the 1999-2000 school year, Wilford was very involved with community
service. Wilford has volunteered with DARE Graduation, VT Night at Kipps
Elementary and Blacksburg Middle School Field Day.
"I feel that it is important for student-athletes to be involved in the
community," Wilford said. "I love working with kids. Knowing that they are
learning, staying out of trouble, and developing communication skills makes
me want to work with them even more."
Wilford is a 6-foot-5 receiver from Richmond who is majoring in University
Studies. The redshirt freshman will be making his collegiate debut on the
field Saturday in Tech's game against Akron.
