Softball ranked 33rd in Preseason Poll
Hokies earn first ever preseason votes
January 27, 2000
The Virginia Tech softball team received 18 points in the USA Today/NFCA Division I preseason softball poll, placing the Hokies in a tie for 33rd place. This marks the first time in Tech's five-year history it will start the season with a preseason ranking.
"It's a great honor to be recognized before the season starts," head coach Scot Thomas said, "but you have to keep in mind that it is the preseason poll. The ranking won't mean anything unless we go out and prove ourselves worthy on the field. Where we are ranked at the end of the season is far more important than where we are ranked before we play a game."
UCLA is the preseason No. 1, according to the poll which was released Wednesday. Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts is ranked No. 16.
The Hokies are coming off a 54-16 season and return 14 letterwinners and eight starters. Tech will open its season on Feb. 18, taking on Ball State in the opening game of the UNC/Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
