Softball's Alumni Game Set For Sunday
Event is first in sport's history
September 28, 2001
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team will hold its first-ever alumni game Sunday at 1 p.m., at Tech Softball Field. The event is part of the Hokies' fall practice season.
The 17 members of the 2002 squad will host a squad of 11 alumni, plus assistant coach Monica Triner.
The Hokies are entering their sixth year as a varsity program and have put up a record of 203-156 in that five-year span.
The current team will be led by pitcher Ashlee Dobbe, Shanel Garofalo at second base, Carmen Farmer at shortstop, Clarisa Crowell at third base and catcher Amy Voorhees.
The alumni squad will be led by some of the recent stars of the program. Michelle Meadows stands as Tech's all-time leader in hits, while Bronwyn Blair is Tech's all-time leader in stolen bases. Home run queen Ali Verbage will also play, as will Tina Diamond, Angie Jenkins-Sponaugle and Katie Mills, three members of the original Tech softball team. Triner, who was an All-American at South Florida and a first-round pick in the WPSL Draft, will handle the pitching duties.
