May 31, 2006
BLACKSBURG - The awards keep rolling in for Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher. Hours after being named a second-team Academic All-American, the rising junior was named a 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NCAA second-team All-American.
The honor makes her the first Tech softball player to be named an All-American and adds to her growing list of awards for her stellar season. Thus far, she has been named or honored with the following:
• 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NCAA Second-Team All-American
• 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Second Team
• 2006 NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team Pitcher
• 2006 ACC Pitcher and Player of the Year
• 2006 ACC First Team
• 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III First Team "This is a huge honor and I'm really appreciative to all the people who nominated and voted for me," Tincher said. "I wouldn't have had the success I did without my teammates behind me playing great defense and my catchers calling the right pitches. I thank them and share this honor with them. To be the first All-American in Hokie softball history is something really special and something I'll always cherish." Tincher, from Eagle Rock, Va., posted a 26-9 record in the circle in leading the Hokies to a 39-21 overall record and a NCAA Tournament bid. She had an ERA of 1.01, which is 13th in the nation, and set new school and conference records with 504 strikeouts. Her 13.8 strikeouts per seven innings rank second in the nation and she was named both the ACC Player and Pitcher of the Year. Tincher was also one of 10 finalists for the USA Softball National Player of the year. Next week, she will travel to Chula Vista, Calif., as part of a tryout for the World University Games. Eighteen players will be selected to represent USA Softball at the World University Games in Taiwan, July 15-23. "This is a great honor for Angela and our program," said head coach Scot Thomas. "We're all very proud of the season she had and know this is the first of more All-America honors to follow in the next two years. There's only one person who can be remembered as the program's first All-American and Angela will forever be that person. That's something special that no one can ever take away from her." The only award remaining for Tincher to possibly receive is an all-state team selection, voted on by the state's Sports Information Directors. That will be announced in June.
