Hokies pick up two wins at adidas Invite
Savre drives in game-winner in seventh as Tech downs Hofstra
March 9, 2007

Box Scores Hokies 8, Robert Morris 1
Hokies 1, Hofstra 0

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team picked up a pair of victories Friday at the USF-adidas Spring Break Invitational, beating Robert Morris 8-1 and Hofstra 1-0. With the wins, the Hokies are now 3-1 in the tournament and are in position to win their pool.

The Hofstra game was a nailbiter as it was a 0-0 affair heading to the seventh inning. After Angela Tincher sat down the Pride in the top half of the inning, Anna Zitt led off with a double down the left field line. Callie Rhodes reached on an infield single to move Zitt over to third and then stole second base. After Hofstra intentionally walked Erin Ota to load the bases, Charisse Mariconda reached on a fielder's choice and Zitt was forced out at home. Stephanie Savre then stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to drive in Rhodes and give Tech the win.

Tincher (W, 14-1) went the distance, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out 11. At the plate, Rhodes had three hits to lead the way while Caroline Stolle had two. Zitt, Savre, Ota and Kelsey Hoffman each had a hit.

In the first game, the Hokies pounded out 10 hits en route to an 8-1 win over Robert Morris. Mariconda, Jessica Everhart, Whitney Davis and Stolle each had two hits. Ota and Savre each had one hit.

The Hokies got on the board in the second inning when Davis singled up the middle. The Colonials responded with a run in the second, but Tech put a three spot on the board in the fifth and four more in the sixth. The big blow came in the sixth when with the bases loaded, Stolle doubled to the gap to drive in three. She finished the game with four RBI.

In the circle, Heather Lowry (W, 3-4) pitched well, going 6.0 innings to pick up the victory. She gave up five hits and an unearned run while striking out a career-high seven batters. Karie Morrison pitched the seventh inning, giving up a walk while striking out one.

Tech (18-6) wraps up pool play Saturday morning, taking on Ohio State at 11 a.m. Following the game, Tech will find out its opponent, flight and game time for Saturday evening.
