Tincher selected as National Player of the Week by USA Softball
Hokies take on US National Team Wednesday night
March 25, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Amateur Softball Association announced today that Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week. The senior hurler recorded a perfect 4-0 weekend not allowing a run in 24.2 innings pitched while also tossing a no-hitter against ACC foe NC State.

"It's a great honor to be recognized by USA Softball," said Tincher. "I couldn't have gotten four wins this week without great defense behind me and timely hitting. My catcher, Kelsey Hoffman, also called great games. Hopefully we can build on this week and continue playing well the rest of the season."

Tincher went 4-0 on the week, including all three wins against NC State in a conference series. She also picked up her 100th career victory. The 2007 first-team All American opened the week by tossing a shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 12 Houston, limiting a Cougar offense that came in hitting .319 as a team to three hits while striking out 14 batters. She picked up both wins in Friday's doubleheader against NC State. In the first game, she tossed her 12th career solo no-hitter in a 3-0 win, striking out 19 batters in 7.0 innings. She entered in relief in the second game and picked up the win, striking out eight in 3.2 innings. In the final game of the series, she tossed a two-hit shutout with 17 more strikeouts.

"Angela pitched lights out this week," said Virginia Tech head coach Scot Thomas. "It was the best performance she's had this year and she's pitching to her potential. It was a great week, team-wise and hopefully something we can build on the second half of the season."

For the week, she didn't allow a run, only gave up eight hits while striking out 58 batters in just 24.2 innings pitched. Tincher is now 15-4 on the season with a 0.46 ERA and 282 strikeouts in 138.1 innings pitched this year.

This is the second USA Softball Player of the Week honor for Tincher. She was co-player of the week for the week of March 19-25, 2007.
