BLACKSBURG - The 14th-ranked North Carolina softball team wrapped up the ACC regular season title with a series win over No. 18 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Tar Heels held on for a 2-1 win in a game that was started Saturday, but had to be finished Sunday because of rain, and then blanked the Hokies 2-0 to end the series. Tech won the first game of the series, 5-2 in 10 innings on Saturday.

UNC (49-9-1, 18-2 ACC) led 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when play resumed Sunday. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Misty Hall led off with a walk and then Beth Walker was hit by a pitch. Jessica Everhart flew out to right field before Whitney Davis broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single to left-center field to make it 2-1. But then, Walker was caught napping and was picked off at second base and Caroline Stolle was called out on strikes to end the game.

Kenzie Roark (L, 2-5) took the loss, going 1.1 innings. She allowed a run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Angela Tincher, who came into the game in the first inning, was relieved for the seventh inning by Roark. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Tech had just the one hit from Davis.

Tincher, who threw over 200 pitches and 15.2 innings on Saturday, got the start in the final game and show some fatigue early on. Breanna Brown led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly and then Tincher gave up an RBI single to Alyssa Francona in the second inning.

The Hokies showed no ability to hit any of the three pitchers UNC tossed at them as they picked up just two hits in the game, one from Jenna Rhodes and one from Charisse Mariconda. After pounding out 10 hits in the opener, the Tech bats mustered just three hits in the final two games.

Tincher (L, 29-6) suffered her first ACC loss of the season, finishing the year 16-1 in conference play. She went the distance, allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. She now sits with 1,987 career strikeouts and needs just 13 more to reach 2,000 for her career.

That chance will come Tuesday as the Hokies (40-14, 16-5 ACC) host a scrappy East Carolina (32-25) team at Tech Softball Park. It will be the final home appearance of the season for the Hokies and the first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 o'clock.

With the loss, the Hokies are locked into the No. 2 seed at next month's ACC Softball Championship at College Park, Md. UNC will be the No. 1 seed with Florida State third and Georgia Tech fourth. Seeds five through eight, including Tech's first-round seventh-seeded opponent will be decided by next weekend's Maryland-Boston College series at Chestnut Hill. The Hokies will open the ACC Tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 12:30 p.m.
