Four Hokies named to All-ACC squads
Tincher earns third Pitcher of the Year honor
May 7, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four Virginia Tech softball players were named All-ACC Wednesday night at the pre-tournament banquet. Angela Tincher and Charisse Mariconda were named to the first team while Kelsey Hoffman and Jenna Rhodes were named to the second team.
In addition, Tincher was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year for an unparalleled third time. Tincher, a senior from Eagle Rock, Va., finishes her career as a four-time All-ACC honoree, earning first-team honors each of the last three seasons. She also was named Player of the Year in 2006, to go along with Pitcher of the Year honors that season - a first in conference history. She is 30-6 on the year with a 0.56 ERA and a nation-leading 532 strikeouts. Tincher is the ACC's all-time leader in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched.
Mariconda, from Hollywood, Fla., was rewarded for her breakout season. Mariconda led the conference in batting with a .387 average. The third baseman has nine doubles, three triples, three home runs, 36 RBI and 14 stolen bases. In ACC play, she is second among regular starters with a .390 batting average. It's the first conference honor for the junior.
Hoffman, Tincher's catcher for the past three full seasons, was recognized for her work behind the plate. She is Tech's all-time leader in fielding percentage (.993) and is in the NCAA's top 12 for career putouts (1,627). This year, the Tequesta, Fla., native is hitting .248 with 12 doubles. Eight of those doubles came in ACC play, tops in the league. It's the first conference honors for the senior.
Rhodes has moved into her role in the leadoff spot nicely and is hitting .322 heading into postseason play. The Broadway, Va., native already holds the school's single-season stolen base record with 38 swipes. She has seen starting action in right field, center field and at the designated player spot. It is the first all-conference honor for the junior.
Danielle Spaulding of North Carolina was named Player of the Year while Alyssa Allbritten of NC State was named Rookie of the Year. UNC's Dana Papa was named Coach of the Year.
No. 17/18 Virginia Tech (41-15) is seeded second at the upcoming ACC Tournament. The Hokies will face seventh-seeded and the host Maryland Terrapins in Thursday's first round at 12:30 p.m.
