Tincher's no-hitter leads Hokies back to ACC title game
Tech downs Florida State, 2-0
May 10, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A no-hitter from Angela Tincher and two timely hits lifted the Virginia Tech softball team to a 2-0 win over Florida State in the semifinals of the 2008 ACC Softball Championship Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Taylor Stadium.
After leaving runners on in the first two innings, Tech finally cashed in a pair of runs in the third inning. Erin Ota led off the inning with a double in which left fielder Whitney Buckmon fell down in the quagmire of an outfield. Misty Hall then drove her in with a single to make it 1-0. After stealing second base, Hall was driven in with a double to the gap to make it 2-0.
After a rough game in the first round of the tournament, Tincher (W, 32-6) was lights out in Saturday's action, striking out 13. The only play to spoil the perfect game was a dropped third strike by catcher Kelsey Hoffman that allowed Buckmon to reach first base. The no-hitter is just the third in ACC Softball Championship history and the 14th of Tincher's career.
At the plate, Ota had two doubles to lead the offense. Hall and Everhart had the other two hits for the Hokies.
Second-seeded Tech (43-15) will now play the winner of No. 1 North Carolina/No. 5 NC State Sunday in the championship game at noon. Third-seeded Florida State falls to 37-26 and is eliminated from the tournament. Tech went 1-2 against UNC this year and 3-0 against the 'Pack.
The Hokies are now 10-4 in ACC Championship play since joining the league in 2004 and will look to become the first team since Florida State in 2004 to repeat as ACC Champions.
