May 18, 2008
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Lady Vols jumped all over Tech starter Angela Tincher in the first inning to cruise to a 7-1 win over the Virginia Tech softball team Sunday in the NCAA Regional final, forcing the deciding game later Sunday.
After recording a strikeout to start the game, Tincher (L, 35-7) walked the next three batters to load the bases before Tiffany Huff drove in two with a double to deep left field.
In the second inning, the Hokies fell apart in the field, committing two costly errors, leading to two more Lady Vol runs and Tincher being pulled for Kenzie Roark.
Tech wasn't able to do anything against Tennessee starter Megan Rhodes, who shut out the Hokies over four innings, allowing just two hits. In the fifth inning, Beth Walker led off the inning with a monstrous home run to left-center field off reliever Ashton Ward. Rhodes eventually re-entered the game and went the rest of the way.
Tincher went just 1.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. She was pulled quickly to try and save her for the deciding game. Roark went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on two home runs to Erinn Webb. She gave up seven hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.
At the plate, Whitney Davis doubled in the third inning for the Hokies' first hit. Also picking up hits for Tech were Charisse Mariconda, Jenna Rhodes and Walker.
In the field, Tech committed three errors.
Tech (46-16) and Tennessee (50-15) will play again at approximately 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to face fourth-seeded Michigan in a best-of-three series starting next weekend.
