ANN ARBOR, Mich - Virginia Tech stayed alive and forced a third and deciding contest on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 defeat of Michigan in game two of their NCAA Super Regional series at Alumni Stadium.

The Hokies (48-17) and Wolverines (52-7) will now decide which team advances to Oklahoma City and the Women's College World Series next weekend by playing a rubber match at 3:15 p.m. today on ESPN.

The Hokies capitalized on two Michigan fielding errors in the bottom of the first inning, and that was all Tech starter Angela Tincher would need, as she went on to strike out 15 batters for the complete-game shutout to improve to 37-8 on the season.

After Erin Ota walked with one out, Charisse Mariconda hit a hard grounder up the middle that Michigan second baseman Samantha Findlay scooped up and shuffled to shortstop Teddi Ewing. Ewing muffed the throw, however, and both runners were safe. Tech's Charisse Mariconda followed with a base hit to load the bases for Kelsey Hoffman, who hit a grounder to third. The Wolverines converted the force-out of Ota at home, but when Michigan catcher Roya St. Clair attempted turn an inning-ending double play with a throw to first, the ball sailed into foul territory and allowed Mariconda to score the game's only run.

The Hokies escaped a scare in the top of the sixth thanks to an excellent play by center fielder Jessica Everhart. With Michigan's Angela Findlay on first after beating out an infield single in a bang-bang play, Samantha Findlay lined a shot to center field that looked like trouble for the Hokies. Everhart tracked it down, however, and fired a strike back to first base to double up Angela Findlay - who was caught in no man's land after racing to second on the apparent hit - to end the inning.

Tech shortstop Misty Hall had two of Tech's three hits in the game.
