TEMPE, Ariz. - After a tough opening game of the day, the Virginia Tech softball team regrouped to down Campbell 5-3 Saturday night at Farrington Stadium in the Diamond Devil Invitational.

The Hokies put aside the tough circumstances from the first game to start quickly against the Fighting Camels. In the first inning, Dani Anderson and Kristen Froehlich picked up hard singles and with two outs, Betty Rose hit her third home run of the weekend, a three-run shot to center field.

Tech plated another run in the second inning when Richelle McGarva drove in Stephanie Kujawa with a two-out single up the middle to make it 4-0. The Camels cut into the lead with a three-run home run by Taylor McGee in the fourth inning.

McGarva gave the Hokies some breathing room in the fifth inning when she led off the inning with a triple to the gap and scored on a wild pitch. That would be enough as the Hokies held to move to 3-1 for the tournament and 6-3 for the Spring Break trip.

At the plate, McGarva led the way with two hits and an RBI. Anderson, Froehlich, Rose (3 RBI) and Cruz each had one.

In the circle, Kenzie Roark got the start and went three-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell (W, 6-1) went the final four innings, allowing no runs on two hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win.

Tech (17-6) will wrap up the tournament on Sunday morning with a game against Howard (3-12) at 10 a.m. local time (1 p.m. Eastern).
