TEMPE, Ariz. – The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up play at the Diamond Devil Invitational Sunday with a 5-1 win over Howard at Farrington Stadium. Tech finishes the tournament 4-1 and wraps up its Spring Break trip with a 7-3 mark as it heads into conference play.

The Hokies got off to a pedestrian start, picking up just one hit in the first three innings. But in the fourth, they got some life in them. Betty Rose led off with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch before coming around to score on Kristina Cruz’s single to the gap. Stephanie Kujawa reached on a fielder’s choice and then stole second base. She then moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on another one to make it 2-0.

In the fifth inning, Rose continued her torrid weekend in the desert with her fourth home run of the five-game tournament. She finished the weekend with 9-for-14 (.643) with four home runs and nine RBI.

Tech got two more runs in the sixth inning, scoring on a Howard throwing error and then on a McGarva infield single.

In the circle, Jasmin Harrell (W, 7-1) was on her game, giving up four hits in seven innings with four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hokies had just six hits in the game, two apiece from from Rose and McGarva. Also picking up a hit were Cruz and Kristen Froehlich. Tech tied the school record for stolen bases in a game with seven.

Tech (18-6) will have the week off after an 11-day road trip and will be back in action next weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C., as it opens ACC play against North Carolina with a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
