BLACKSBURG - A big fourth inning propelled the North Carolina softball team to a 9-0, five-inning win over Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park as the Tar Heels took the rubber game in the three-game series.

The two teams were scoreless for three innings before Tech starter Jasmin Harrell went through a wild stretch, giving up two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch as UNC took a 2-0 lead. After the last walk to load the bases, she was pulled for Bailey Liddle, who gave up a grand slam on the first pitch she offered to Jordan Scarboro to quickly make it 6-0.

In the fifth inning, Liddle gave up an infield single and then a big two-run home run to right-center field before being relieved by Isabella Corrao. Corrao didn’t fare much better, giving up a solo home run on her first offering to make it 9-0.

Lori Spingola shut down the Tech offense, allowing just an infield bunt single to Bkaye Smith in the second inning, while striking out four.

Harrell (L, 10-8) cruised through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth before she was pulled. She went 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on two hits with a strikeout and three walks. Liddle pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits - two of which were home runs. Corrao went 0.2 innings, giving up a run on a solo home run.

Tech (18-12, 1-2 ACC) will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Cornell in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
