CONWAY, S.C. - After letting a big late-inning lead slip away, the Virginia Tech softball team again found away to score late and beat Maryland, winning 11-10 Saturday afternoon at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic.

The Hokies fell behind early 1-0, but scored three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-2 lead. In the first, Kelsey Mericka blasted a three-run home run and Lauren Gaskill tripled home two runs in the second stanza to highlight the scoring. A three-run home run from Maryland’s Corey Schwartz made it a 6-5 ballgame in the third inning, but the Hokies responded with four more runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-5 lead. Vanessa Gonzalez hit a two-run home run and Gaskill crushed an offering to deep center for a solo shot.

Like yesterday when the two teams met, Maryland didn’t give up and scored a run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to tie the game at 10-10. Gonzalez led off the seventh with a double, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Breanna Davenport’s walk-off single to center.

The Hokies had a big game at the plate, picking up 10 hits and three more home runs. Gaskill led the way with three hits and three RBIs while Davenport, Gonzalez and Michelle Prong all had two. Mericka had a hit and four RBIs to round out the offense.

Maggie Tyler got the start, but lasted just 2.1 innings. She allowed five runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Kelly Heinz (W, 2-0) got the win in relief, going the final 4.2 innings. She allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Tech (3-0) will take on the host Chanticleers at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
