JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Behind a four-hit shutout from Kelly Heinz, the Virginia Tech softball team opened weekend play at the University of North Florida with a 4-0 win over Jacksonville State Friday morning.

Katey Smith provided the early offense for the Hokies, driving in Breanna Davenport and Kylie McGoldrick with a double down the line in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Lauren Gaskill walked, stole second base and moved to third on an error before being driven in by McGoldrick, who singled to left field. Later in the inning, Kelsey Mericka struck with an RBI single to plate McGoldrick.

Heinz (W, 3-0) went the distance, allowing no runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

For the first time this year, the Hokies failed to hit a home run, but still got the run production needed to pick up the win. Six players each garnered one hit - Vanessa Gonzalez, Michelle Prong, Davenport, McGoldrick, Smith and Mericka - while Gaskill drew two walks and scored a run. She is not just seven runs away from tying the school record for runs scored in a career.

Tech (6-0) will be back in action at 2:30 p.m., taking on two-time defending CAA champion James Madison. The Dukes (0-0) posted 45 wins last year, including two over the Hokies and return All-American pitcher Jailyn Ford, along with a strong offense.
