HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up play in Hawaii by defeating the host Rainbow Wahine 1-0 on the fourth day of the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic in O’ahu to claim the tournament title with a 5-0 mark.

A pitcher’s dual broke out, but Katey Smith finally broke open the scoring when she led off the sixth inning with a home run to left field on the first pitch of the inning. That would be all Maggie Tyler would need as she shut down UH for the second time in three days.

Tyler (W, 10-3) went the distance, tossing a five-hit shutout. The junior walked one and struck out 11, including three in the last inning to seal the win.

At the plate, the Hokies had six hits, coming from six different players: Breanna Davenport, Kylie McGoldrick, Kelsey Mericka, Michelle Prong, Vanessa Gonzalez and Smith.

Tech (21-3) will head back home to Virginia on Sunday and will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Radford (5-11) in a single game starting at 7 p.m. at Dedmon Center Field.
