RADFORD, Va. – The Virginia Tech softball team, ranked 25th in the country, ran its winning streak to nine games with a 11-1, five-inning win over Radford Wednesday night at RU Softball Stadium.

The Hokies struck early due to some wildness from Radford pitcher Tiffany Brown. Brown struggled with her control, walking three and hitting a batter as Tech plated two runs on just one hit in the first inning. In the second inning, the Hokies drew four more walks to plate another run, but left the bases loaded for the second straight inning. In the third inning, after drawing two more walks, Breanna Davenport singled to right field to plate Vanessa Gonzalez to make it 4-0. A sacrifice fly from Lauren Gaskill plated pinch runner Ashley Kowalski later in the frame.

In the fourth inning, Michelle Prong blasted her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to make it 7-0. Radford used a two-out walk and double off the wall in the fourth inning to get on the board. The Hokies got that run back in the fifth inning when Kylie McGoldrick drove in Lauren Gaskill with a single and then Kelsey Mericka hit her 11th home run of the season to make it 10-1.

At the plate, the Hokies had nine hits, coming from eight different players: Davenport, Gaskill, McGoldrick, Katey Smith, Mericka, Prong (2) and Vanessa Gonzalez. The Hokies drew 11 walks in the game, led by three from Gonzalez.

In the circle, Kelly Heinz (W, 7-0) went the distance, allowing one run on three hits with six walks and seven strikeouts.

The Hokies (22-6, 3-2 ACC) will be back in action this weekend, hosting No. 10 Florida State (23-7, 5-1 ACC) at Tech Softball Park. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon, with both games being streamed live on ESPN3. The single game will be played on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
