LAS VEGAS - The Virginia Tech softball team used a three-run fifth inning and a solo home run off the bat of senior Vanessa Gonalez to defeat Indiana State, 4-3, in their season opener and their first game of the Sportco Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas on Friday afternoon.

Junior Breanna Davenport, classmate Jessie Mehr and sophomore Olivia Lattin each tallied two hits with Davenport and Lattin posting RBI doubles. Freshman Carrie Eberle tossed 6 2/3 innings in her first career start for the Hokies (1-0) and senior Aysha Richardson came on to close the door in the bottom of the seventh to register her first career save.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the fifth, Richardson, who started the game at designated player, reached on her second bunt single of the game and advanced to second on a ground out. After Richardson moved to third on a passed ball, Lattin rocketed a double down the left field line that scored Richardson and tied the score at 1-1.

The very next batter was Davenport who rocketed the first pitch she saw to the right centerfield gap, moved to third on an error and scored the go-ahead run to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead. Tech extended their lead to 3-1 after Davenport scored from third on a fielder’s choice.

After Eberle retired three batters in the bottom of the fifth, Gonzalez led-off the top of the sixth with her 17th career home run that made it 4-1 Hokies.

The Sycamores made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh where they pushed across to runs to cut their deficit to one, 4-3. But Richardson came on and recorded a strikeout to end it.

Tech will be back in action later today at 4:30 EST when they take on UNLV. The game will be streamed live on TheMW.com
