LAS VEGAS - The Virginia Tech softball team will leave Las Vegas with a 3-1 record to open the 2017 season after a 6-2 win over CSU Bakersfield in the final game of the Sportco Kick Off Classic on Sunday evening.

Freshman Carrie Eberle tossed six innings and allowed only one earned run with three strikeouts. Sophomore Olivia Lattin went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI for the Hokies while junior Breanna Davenport went 2-for-4 with a two run home run, her first of the season.

After pushing four runs across in their 7-1 victory over Southern Utah earlier in the day, the Hokies crossed the plate three times in the first against the Roadrunners (1-4).

Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb led off the game with a double and Lattin sent her home with a two-base knock of her own, giving Tech an early 1-0 lead. The very next batter was Davenport who sent a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field fence that extended the Hokies’ lead to 3-0.

After the Roadrunners responded with a run in the top half of the second, junior Aysha Richardson was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom half. She then stole second, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Whitcomb, making it 4-0 Tech.

Bakersfield cut their deficit to two in the fourth, 4-2, but RBI doubles from Lattin and Richardson in the home half of the inning that made 6-2 and gave Eberle some breathing room. The freshman went on to blank the defending WAC champions in the fifth and sixth innings before freshman Taylor Barnes came on to finish her second-consecutive game.

The Hokies return to action next weekend in Atlanta for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge from Feb. 17-19.
