While at the helm at Louisiana Tech a season ago, Gomez spearheaded an impressive effort that saw the Techsters finish third in the Western Athletic Conference, their best-ever finish. The squad put together a 15-5 record on the year and Gomez placed four players on the All-WAC Team, WAC-Acadmic Team, and two players into the All-Louisiana Tennis Team, while also working to bring in the eventual WAC Freshman of the Year last season.

Gomez initially joined the Hokies' staff after working for various tennis clubs and academies over the past few years. He served on the coaching staff at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Fla., where he worked with many professional players and juniors, currently playing tennis at the Division I level. He also served as assistant tennis director at the George Washington University Tennis Center in Washington, D.C., and on the coaching staff at the Green Spring Racquet Club in Baltimore, Md. In addition, he spent multiple summer seasons with Cliff Drysdale at Southampton Tennis Club, in NY. He also spent a season as the men's tennis graduate assistant coach at Illinois State University.

Gomez played his college tennis at the University of Toledo (2002-05), where he was named captain and MVP of the team, as well as being named MAC Player of the Week on various occasions, and later went on to LSU to earn a Masters in sport management. Prior to college, he was the No.1 ranked Under-16 and 18s player in Venezuela and had a world junior ITF ranking of No. 312.
