Freddy Gomez Assistant Women's Tennis Coach

Freddy Gomez enters his third season on theVirginia Tech staff after working for several tennis clubs and academies over the years.

Prior to Virginia Tech, he was the assistant tennis director at the George Washington University Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. He was also on the staff at the Green Spring Racquet Club in Baltimore, Md.

The 29-year old Gomez was on the coaching staff at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Fla. on two occasions and was the men's assistant tennis coach at Illinois State in 2006. He also spent time as an assistant pro with Cliff Drysdale Tennis in Southampton, N.Y.

Gomez played his college tennis at the University of Toledo (2002-05), where he was named captain and MVP of the team as well as being named MAC Player of the Week. Prior to college, he was the No.1 ranked Under-16 player in Venezuela in 1998 and had a world junior ITF ranking of No. 312. 

Gomez is a 2005 graduate of the University of Toledo with a bachelor of business degree in marketing and international business and he earned a masters of science degree in sports management from LSU in 2008.

“We are pleased with the hiring of Freddy Gomez,” said Virginia Tech women’s tennis coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. "Freddy brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy into our program and I feel he will be a great fit in terms of his goals and coaching philosophy."

Gomez recently married Julie Lard. The two have two Dachshund dogs, Bruno and Bress.
