Responsibilities: Helms serves as the sport administrator for the Olympic sports of men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, softball and volleyball. He also oversees the information technology area within the athletics department, and he serves as the liaison between the athletics department and the university’s office of undergraduate admissions as well as the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) office.

At Virginia Tech: Before moving into his current role within the department in 2008, Helms served as the director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) at Tech. He oversaw an office comprised of an associate director, four assistant directors, a systems analyst, an intern, and a secretary forming a group of professionals serving the needs of all student-athletes. In addition to his duties directing SAASS, he served as a liaison between the academic and athletic communities and is an ad hoc member of the University Athletic Committee.
Prior to Virginia Tech: Helms came to Tech from Michigan State University, where he served as the assistant director of the Student-Athlete Support Services office. Prior to that, he served as the coordinator of academic affairs for the Florida State University football program. He also worked in an academic advising capacity for student-athletes at Central Connecticut State University.
Education: Wake Forest, 1990 (psychology); Springfield (Mass.) College, 1993 (master’s in athletic counseling).
Personal: A native of Frederick, Md., Helms and his wife, Renee, have a son, Walker, and a daughter, Meigs. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing and running.
