Bill Roth The Voice Of The Hokies

photo "From the blue waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the hills of Tennessee, the Virginia Tech Hokies are on the air!"

That familiar refrain, delivered by Bill Roth, the "Voice of the Hokies," begins every Tech sports radio broadcast. It reflects the network's goal of reaching Virginia Tech fans in every corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and beyond. So, whether they are sailing off Virginia's Eastern shore, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, or sitting in Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Tech fans know they're always within range of a Virginia Tech ISP Sports Network Radio affiliate.

Roth, in his 21st season as the lead play-by-play announcer of Virginia Tech football and basketball, also serves as the host of the weekly radio shows featuring Tech head coaches Frank Beamer and Seth Greenberg. Roth also hosts Virginia Tech Sports Today, the weekly television magazine show which airs every Sunday on stations and cable networks throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

From Sugar Bowls, to Orange Bowls, to NCAA Tournaments, Roth has described some of the greatest moments in Virginia Tech athletics history. He has been honored as Virginia's Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association a record eight times.

Roth's cries of "TOUCHDOWN TECH!" have become a favorite of Hokie fans of all ages and his accurate and exciting descriptions of Tech football and basketball have made him one of the most popular figures on the Tech athletic scene

"If football coach Frank Beamer is the leader of the Hokie Nation, and assistant coach Bud Foster is the Minister of Defense, then some might call Roth Tech's Secretary of State."He's very much a part of what we're all about here," Beamer said. "When you hear his voice, you immediately think Virginia Tech football," wrote Howard Wimmer of The Roanoke Times.

During the off-seasons, Roth has worked for ESPN in a variety of roles, including calling play-by-play of NCAA Lacrosse, baseball, basketball, kick boxing, and field hockey. Recently, Roth joined forces with the Virginia Education Association to promote reading throughout Virginia by appearing in television spots with The Cat in the Hat, of Dr. Seuss fame. The light-hearted spots encourage schoolchildren to read regularly.

Roth, along with current Charlotte Bobcat and former University of North Carolina star Jeff McInnis, appeared in an episode of the syndicated reality show "Blind Date." In the show, Roth plays a sportscaster who shares professional tips with two people learning the ropes of broadcasting during a basketball game featuring the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Roth graduated from Syracuse University in 1987 with a degree in broadcast journalism. At Syracuse, Roth won the distinguished Robert Costas Scholarship in 1986.

Today, Roth is a frequent speaker at Virginia Tech functions, Hokie Club fund-raising events and charitable organizations such as Montgomery County Red Cross and Hokies for the Hungry, and others. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Montgomery Country United Way and is a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Media Committee.

In addition to his radio and television duties at Virginia Tech, Roth also writes a weekly column, The Kroger Roth Report, which appears weekly on hokiesports.com, and in Tech's official monthly sports magazine. He also hosts the weekly Hokie Podcast, on hokiesports.com.
