    The VT Athletics Office of Student-Athlete Development hopes to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. Each team is expected to complete two personal development workshops per academic year catering to the interest and needs of the team. Campus and community resources are utilized to educate student-athletes. Topics include:

  • Anger Management and Problem Solving
  • Body Image
  • Dining Etiquette
  • Diversity
  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Financial Management
  • Gambling
  • Hazing
  • Leadership Development
  • Sexual Health & Responsibility
  • Social Networking
  • Stress Management
  • The VT Athletics Office of Student-Athlete Development also coordinates the New Student-Athlete Orientation prior to the start of each academic year. Incoming student-athletes are also expected to participate in Virginia Tech Orientation and Hokie Hi Welcome Back programs. In addition, all Virginia Tech student-athletes are required to participate in Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Training. MVP is a leadership program that encourages students to play a decisive role in solving problems in social settings. The training is focused on an innovative "bystander" model that empowers each student to take an active role in promoting a positive community.
