June 11, 1999

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech head swimming and diving coach Ned Skinner announced Friday 17 athletes who will enroll at Tech for the 1999-2000 school year to compete in the swimming and diving program. Chris Bonner, Marc Severin and Justin Wild head up a group of eight men signed by Skinner, while Meagan Drolet, Kelly Furlong and Paige Sample top the list of nine women signed.

"I am very pleased to have signed so many strong swimmers and divers," Skinner said. "Going into my second year, we needed to fill in some holes in various events and we were very successful in the recruiting process. Of the seventeen incoming freshmen, we anticipate most of them making an immediate impact in both our dual meets and at the championships."

Bonner (Loveland, Ohio) is one of two male divers signed. He was fifth at the Ohio High School State Championships this past year. Severin (Reston, Va.) will compete in the freestyle and backstroke and scored in five events at the Winter Junior Nationals. He took home the silver medal in the 100 free. Wild (Seaford, Va.) will compete in the sprint freestyle. He was a state finalist and a Junior National qualifier in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Drolet (Mt. Holly, N.C.) is another sprint freestyler signed by Skinner. She finished seventh at the Winter Junior Nationals in the 100 free and ninth in the 50 free. Furlong (Springfield, Va.) will compete in the backstroke and butterfly events and was a State and Junior National Finalist. Sample, from Columbia, S.C., will train for the breaststroke and butterfly events. She finished 15th at the National Age Group Championships in the 100 breaststroke.

"I am very impressed with the balance of this incoming group of student-athletes," Skinner said. "The average SAT score of the seventeen is 1,200 and many of them rank in the top 35 in the nation in their respective events."
