BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech sophomore Gus Calado qualified for the upcoming World Swimming Championships earlier this week in the 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.

Calado, a native of Recife, Brazil, will represent his home country of Brazil in the meet, which is scheduled for Oct. 7-11 in the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The meet will be conducted in short course meters.

"I am elated to have earned this opportunity," Calado said. "I think I can go even faster!"

Calado, who was named BIG EAST swimmer of the year during his freshman season, finished 12^th in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA Championships in March.

"Gus narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic team in May and it fueled his desire to become a world class swimmer, we are very proud of his accomplishments," said head coach Ned Skinner."

His second place time of 1:57.21 in the 200 short course meter butterfly earned him the spot since the time met the international time standard. Calado will also be able to compete in the 400-meter freestyle based on his second place finish in the meet in this event.
