Tech downs Radford, Richmond
October 31, 2001
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's swimming & diving team cruised to
two victories Wednesday afternoon at War Memorial pool, downing Radford and Richmond. The Hokies beat Radford,
206-79, and Richmond, 163.5-130.5. In the other meet, Richmond defeated Radford,
249-47.
Not counting exhibition times that would have been low enough to win events for
Tech, six Hokies were victorious in individual events. Lindsey Saufley (1,000 free),
Sarah Gardner (200 free), Kelly
Furlong (100 back), Jen
Brielmaier (100 breast), Jill
Turner (50 free) and Meagan
Drolet (100 free) each picked up first-place points for Tech. The 200 medley
relay team of Furlong, Brielmaier, Jen McLaughlin and Turner, as
well as the 400 freestyle relay team of Drolet, Erin Milfeit, Whitney Johnsen and
Jamie Spradlin were also
winners on the day.
For Richmond, Mary Adams set a pool record in the 200 IM with a time 2:06.37. She also won the 200 breaststroke. Katie Shipe won both the one- and three-meter diving events. Leigh Figh won the 500 freestyle and Elizabeth Cook won the 200 backstroke and the 200 butterfly.
Radford had no individual wins on the day. The Highlanders are in their inaugural season.
The two wins improve Tech to 3-0 on the year. Richmond's split of two meets moves the Spiders to 3-1 while Radford falls to 1-2 on the year.
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action on Nov. 3, taking on Ohio State and Maryland at Columbus, Ohio. The next home meet is Dec. 8 at 1 p.m., when the teams take on Maryland-Baltimore County.
