Tech Swimming & Diving Teams Victorious
Both men, women down UMBC

BLACKSBURG - Both the Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming & diving teams were victorious Saturday, winning meets against Maryland-Baltimore County at War Memorial Pool. The women won 182-92 while the men captured a 162-136 victory.

On the women's side, Jill Turner broke the pool record with a victory in the 100 freestyle at 51.59. Jamie Spradlin was a double winner, capturing both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. Katie Grossi also won two events, winning both the one- and three-meter diving events.

Other winners for the Hokies were Jen McLaughlin (200 fly), Katie Peterson (100 back), Erin Milfeit (200 free) and Meagan Drolet (50 free).

On the men's side Doug Roper took the three-meter diving event while teammate Matt Bolen won the one-meter diving event. Rob Duffy won the 200 butterfly while Kevin Furlong won the 100 breaststroke. Greg Kubovcik was victorious in the 1,650 freestyle event while Joey Piekarski won the 200 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay team of Steve Tozer, Furlong, Duffy and Joel Cross also took first place.

For the Retrievers, Evan Patrick broke a 10-year-old pool record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.84. He becomes the first male swimmer ever at War Memorial Pool to go below 46 seconds in the event.

The women's team improves to 6-1 while the men move to 4-1. For UMBC, the women are now 2-3 while the men are 3-1.

Tech will be idle from competition until 2002, when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., for a meet at James Madison University on Jan. 11. The diving begins at 3 p.m., followed by the swimming events at 6 p.m.
