Virginia Tech swimming and diving announces 2005 schedule
Hokies to compete against seven ACC schools, including a home dual with rival Virginia
August 3, 2005

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech athletic department announced Friday that it has finalized the 2005-06 men's and women's swimming and diving schedules.

Both Hokie teams will host four dual meets during the season and two intersquad battles at War Memorial Pool. The team will face seven different ACC schools in the first half of the season, while taking on former BIG EAST rivals West Virginia and Pittsburgh after Jan. 1.

"This schedule gives us an excellent balance of ACC schools as well as traditional rivals, West Virginia and Pittsburgh," Tech head swimming coach Ned Skinner said. "Within our schedule we have the opportunity to race against some of the top schools in the area. This helps us prepare for our championships in the fall and the ACC Championships at the end of the year."

Tech opens the season on Sept. 23 with the intrasquad Pentathlon at 3 p.m., and then hosts Clemson and the Marshall women's team on the weekend of Oct. 7-8. The Hokie men will participate in the Alumni Meet the same day the Tech women swim against the Thundering Herd.

On Oct. 21-22, the Hokies participate in their first multi-team meet of the season at the Maryland quad. Tech will compete against the Terrapins as well as ACC rivals Georgia Tech and Florida State. The following weekend, the Hokies travel to NC State.

Tech will host the University of Virginia on Nov. 2. This marks the first time the Hokies will face their in-state rival as members of the ACC. On Nov. 17, Tech travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to swim at the Nike Cup against an eight-team field, including host North Carolina.

The Hokies wrap up the first half of the year with another intrasquad meet, the Virginia Tech Sprint Championships, on Dec. 8 at War Memorial Pool.

Following a two-week sabbatical to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for holiday training, the Hokies open the 2006 portion of the schedule at non-conference foes, UNC-Wilmington, East Carolina and West Virginia.

On Jan. 28, Tech hosts Pittsburgh on seniors' and parents' day. The Hokie men have one final tune up, at home against VMI on Feb. 4, before the postseason begins.

The Hokie women open the postseason with the ACC Championships on Feb. 15 and the NCAA Championships on March 16. The men's conference championship meet will open on Feb. 22 and the NCAA Championships will be March 23. The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships will begin on March 10.

Last season the Tech women finished fifth in the ACC and 30th at the NCAA Championships, while the Hokie men placed seventh in the ACC and tied for 32nd at the NCAA Finals.
