Meet Results Hokies vs. NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. - Six different Virginia Tech athletes won individual events, including four on the women's side as the Hokies split a dual meet with Atlantic Coast Conference rival NC State Friday evening at Casey Aquatic Center. Tech's 22nd-ranked women defeated previously unbeaten NC State, 139-103, while the Hokie men fell 155-88.

"NC State raced very hard and performed very well in both the pool and on the diving boards tonight," Tech head coach Ned Skinner said. "They should be commended on their performance. We were impressed with them."

Junior Mason Walsh (Herndon, Va.) highlighted the meet for the Hokie women. Walsh had a hand in a pair of event victories for Tech, including the top time in the 100-yard freestyle event. The 5-foot-10 junior achieved her second NCAA 'B' standard of the year, finishing the event in 50.95 seconds. Walsh also swam the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay team, which captured the top time in the meet of 3:31.43.

"Mason Walsh emerged as a leader both in the pool and on the pool deck," Skinner said. "Her 100 free really inspired her teammates."

The Hokie women scored 15 or more points in five different events, including both relays, when the team claimed the top two times. Freshman Sara Smith (McGaheysville, Va.) led a Hokie sweep in the 50 freestyle, by finishing with the top time of 23.76. Teammates Juliana Daniell (Atlanta, Ga.) and Courtney Walsh (Yardley, Pa.) finished in order behind her.

In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Millie Campbell (Richmond, Va.) led another Tech sweep with the first-place time of 2:18.73. Sophomore Jessica Botzum (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior Emily Chen (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished second and third, respectively, behind Campbell.

Sophomore Beth Byrum (Spring, Texas) won Tech's final individual event, placing first in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.11.

"Beth Byrum provided a much-needed spark for us in the distance freestyle events," Skinner said. Her 500 free win was very important to us winning the meet."

On the men's side, sophomore Zac Czaplicki (North Haven, Conn.) and Gus Calado (Recife, Brazil) claimed individual event victories for the Hokies.

Czaplicki's led Tech's highest scoring event with a time of 1:42.53 to finish first in the 200 freestyle. Teammates Tom Alberi (Cape Elizabeth, Me.) and John Riley (Oak Ridge, N.C.) finished second and third in the event for a 16-point event.

Calado, who also placed second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 IM, won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.92. Junior Steven Jensen (Mays Landing, N.J.), placed second in the event with a time of 1:53.26.

"I would like to commend Zac Czaplicki and Stephen Jensen for racing so well, as well as Scott Hudson, for his efforts on the boards," Skinner said. "Hopefully, this tough competition will prepare us for our rival, Virginia, on Wednesday."

The Hokies will add another chapter in the Commonwealth Challenge Wednesday evening by hosting a dual meet against the Cavaliers, at 6 p.m., at War Memorial Pool.
