Tech women sink Marshall
Luttermoser wins two events to pace Hokies
October 8, 2005
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Allison Luttermoser (Mechanicsburg, Va.) won a pair of events Saturday, as the Virginia Tech women's swimming and diving team defeated Marshall, 126-92, in a dual meet at War Memorial Pool.
While the Hokies set fewer pool records as in Friday evening's win over Clemson, the team was nearly as successful. Six different Tech athletes won individual events as well as the Hokies' 400-yard medley relay team in the first event of the day.
"Today was a really fun day," Head Swimming Coach Ned Skinner said. "The women came back from a great meet last night and raced very well."
Luttermoser claimed event wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke to earn 18 of Virginia Tech's 126 points for the meet.
Also earning event victories were senior Laura Lunn (Regina, Sask.), in 1-meter diving, sophomore Talita Ribeiro (Sau Paul, Brazil) in 100 freestyle, freshman Claire Dickey (Roanoke, Va.) in the 50 free, Sara Smith (McGaheysville, Va.) in the 200 and junior Emily Chen (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 1000.
Smith's 200 time of 1:51.29, nearly shattered her pool-best time, which she set in yesterday's meet.
Tech's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Smith, Ribeiro, Emily Guschke (Colonial Heights, Va.) and Mason Walsh (Herndon, Va.) did break the War Memorial Pool record in the event, with a time of 1:34.04. The group swam the third-fastest time in that event in school history.
Tech (2-0 in dual meets) will be in action again in two weeks, when both the men's and women's team participate in the Maryland Quad, Oct. 21-22 in College Park, Md.
