Cavaliers sweep Hokies
Virginia triumphs in first visit to Tech in nine years
November 2, 2005
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Four different Cavalier swimmers had multiple event
victories Wednesday, as the University of Virginia
swimming and diving teams knocked off Virginia Tech at War Memorial Pool. The
14th-ranked Cavalier women's team topped the
22nd-ranked Hokies 135-108, while the No. 14 Wahoo men's team
dropped Tech, 134-102.
Freshman Sara Smith (McGaheysville, Va.) led the Hokie women with event victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 200 IM to score 18 of Tech's 108 points. Smith broke her own pool record in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:04.62, just missing the NCAA 'B' cut again. Smith did achieve her third 'B' time of the season in the 100, however, completing the event in 50.86 seconds.
Junior Mason Walsh (Herndon, Va.) and senior Laura Lunn (Regina, Sask.), also posted event victories Wednesday. Walsh's time of 23.19 in the 50 freestyle was her second-fastest of the season, and earned her another NCAA 'B' cut. While Lunn recorded a score of 266.69 in women's three-meter diving to win that event for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech's 400 freestyle relay team of Walsh, Emily Guschke (Colonial Heights, Va.), Claire Dickey (Roanoke, Va.) and Talita Ribeiro (Sao Paul, Brazil), also won their event with a time of 3:28.20.
Tech's best scoring event on the women's side came in the 100 free, where Smith, Walsh and Guschke combined to score 14.5 points for the Hokies. After the event, Tech led by a four-point margin.
On the men's side, three different individuals won events for Virginia Tech.
Senior Phil Smith (Richmond, Va.) captured first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:11.93.
Sophomore Zac Czaplicki (North Haven, Conn.) headlined Tech's best event, with the top time of 46.54 in the 100 freestyle. Teammates Pete Cancila (Broomall, Penn.) and Jake Bova (Roanoke, Va.) took second and tied for fourth, respectively to score 14.5 points for the Hokies in the event.
Cancila captured the Hokie men's final event triumph, with a first-place finish in the 50 free. Cancila's time of 21.39 was just over a second off the NCAA qualifying standard.
The Hokies (Men: 1-5, Women: 5-2) will be in action again on Nov. 17, when the teams travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Nike Cup. Tech will compete against host UNC, as well as a host of top non-conference opponents.
