February 4, 2006
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Scott Beard (Chesterfield, Va.) broke a three-year old pool record, while seniors Tom Alberi (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Tommy Evans (Blacksburg, Va.) and Phil Smith (Richmond, Va.) each won an event in their final home meets as Virginia Tech downed visiting VMI, 130-96, Saturday at War Memorial Pool.
The Hokies complete the regular season with a 5-6 record in dual meets, winning four of their final five over the last month of the year.
"It was great to see our men put Pittsburgh behind them and race hard today," Skinner said. "It's going to make the next two-and-a-half weeks of training a lot better."
Sophomores Scott Hudson (Springfield, Va.) and Beard competed like champions on Saturday.
Hudson swept the diving events, posting scores of 267.83 in 3-meter diving and 260.40 in 1-meter competition. Teammate Chris Waldheim (Spring, Texas) captured his two best scores of the season to take second in both events. Waldheim scored a 257.03 off the 1-meter board and a 237.60 in 3-meter competition.
Beard won the 50 free with his second-fastest time of the year, 20.60, and set a new pool record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.55.
Tech won the first seven events Saturday, including one each by graduating athletes Alberi and Evans. Alberi won the 100 butterfly with a career-best time of 50.60, while Evans earned his first event victory of the season in the 100 free by posting a time of 47.86.
Smith swam the second-leg of the 200 medley relay which finished first with a time of 1:34.36. Other event winners for Tech included Neil Savage (Roswell, Ga.) in the 1000, Gus Calado (Recife, Brazil) in the 200 free and Zac Czaplicki (North Haven, Conn.) in the 200 IM.
"I'd like to give credit to the VMI men's team, I felt they set themselves up for a conference championship," Tech head coach Ned Skinner said. "They came in here and raced hard."
The Hokie men will compete in the ACC Championships, beginning Feb. 22 in College Park, Md. The women, meanwhile, will compete in their conference championships on Feb. 15 at the University of Maryland.
