Tech takes fifth at SMU Classic
Botzum takes second in 200-yard breaststroke

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's swimming and diving nine-member squad that traveled to Dallas, Texas, finished the SMU Swim Classic in fifth, Saturday. Tech scored 253 points, while host Southern Methodist scored 327 points for the first-place spot.
Junior Jessica Botzum barely missed her second NCAA "B" cut time of the season when she finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke. Botzum touched the wall in 2:17.68, just missing the mark of 2:17.65. Her first cut time of the season was recorded at home against James Madison in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sara Smith finished third and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley, respectively. In the freestyle, Smith recorded a time of 51.86, while in the individual medley, she finished in 2:07.84.
Stephanie Jones swam to a fourth-place spot in the 500-yard freestyle. She clocked in a time of 5:47.88 in the event. Freshman Kelly deMarrais also had the fourth-place finish in an event for the Hokies. She swam the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.00.
Megan Newell finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.80, while in the diving well, Heather Fulton was fifth with 231.55 points.
The relay squad of Smith, Millie Campbell, Allison Luttermoser and Katie Suhr opened up the final night of the meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The four-some totaled a time of 3:31.76 for a sixth-place finish. For the 200-yard freestyle relay, Luttermoser, Suhr, Jones and deMarrais combined for a time of 1:38.04 and the sixth-place spot.
The entire women's swimming and diving team returns Oct. 27-28 at the Virginia Quad Meet. The H2Okies will take on host Virginia, Clemson and Penn State.
