February 24, 2007
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team finished the 2007 ACC Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., with a bang, Saturday. In the final event on the final day, the 400-yard freestyle relay won the ACC title in a school-record time. The win, along with two runner-up finishes, helped the Hokies finish fourth overall with 388 points. Florida State won the 2007 title with 714.
The Hokies and Florida State's squad were neck-in-neck through the entire 400-yard freestyle relay. Kaan Tayla opened the race for Tech with a four-lap time of 44.19. Jake Bova then took off from the block and swam his laps in 44.34. Zac Czaplicki shouldered the third leg and finished in 44.32. Scott Beard brought up the final spot in 43.82, racing FSU's Alex Kennon to the wall, with Beard hitting the finish first. Tech's quartet combined for a school record time of 2:56.67, surpassing the time of 2:58.86 set earlier this season. The time gave the Hokies a second NCAA "B" cut in the event.
Tayla, competing in the 100-yard freestyle, finished in second-place in 44.13. The time, an NCAA "B" cut, broke Tech's Christian Lindberg's 2004 program record of 44.14. Florida State's Ed Denton just out-reached Tayla, finishing in 44.09. Beard joined Tayla in the event finals. He earned a fifth-place finish after touching the wall in 44.83.
Ian deToll and Bova finished the race in tandem. deToll stopped the clock in 45.29 for 12th-place, while Bova recorded a time of 45.41 for 13th. Pete Cancila earned 19th in the event, after finishing in 45.94, nearly one second faster than his preliminary time.
Gus Calado scored a second runner-up medal for the Hokies in the 200-yard butterfly. Recording an NCAA provisional time, Calado reached the wall in 1:45.59, only two-tenths of a second behind Virginia's Stefan Hirniak. Tech's Czaplicki finished the event with a 1:48.76 mark, nearly a half-second faster than his qualifying time, for eighth-place. Mike Lewis rounded out the trio of Hokies in the event, notching a time of 1:52.01 for 20th.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Ben Prue recorded a time of 1:52.28 for 15th, the Hokies' top finish in the event. Kevin Koehr swam in a time of 1:52.97 for 19th. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Griffin Lutterbein swam the fastest time of the Hokies. Finishing the mile in 15:49.80, Lutterbein earned 17th place. Stephen Jensen and Scott Harkins represented Tech in the 200-yard breaststroke. Jensen had the top finish, taking 18th in 2:04.72. Harkins earned a time of 2:06.93 for 21st.
The Hokies' fourth-place team finish is two spots higher than last year's finish, and 53.5 more points. Tech won three ACC championships, broke two Koury Natatorium pool records and set three school records. The Hokies also recorded 16 "B" cut times and 18 season-best times.
For their efforts during the championships, six Hokies earned all-conference honors. Tayla earned four nods for his participation in the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams and two runner-up performances in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Beard ended the championships with three honors - all for wins - in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and the 100-yard butterfly. Bova was named all-conference for his help with the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay squads. Calado and Czaplicki each notched one all-conference award for the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay, respectively.
