March 22, 2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior four-time All-American Jessica Botzum will don the H2Okie uniform one last time later tonight after finishing seventh in the 200 breaststroke prelim with a season-best time of 2:11.31 during the day three morning session of the 2008 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Botzum, who finished fifth in the 100 breast on Friday night, has now reached her fourth straight final in the 200 breast. As the 2005 ACC Freshman of the Year, she placed seventh, followed by a ninth-place result in 2006 and eighth-place finish in 2007 as the ACC Swimmer of the Year.
Megan Newell continued her remarkable week in the butterfly events as she snapped the six-year-old Tech school record in the 200 butterfly with a 36th-place finish at 2:00.01. She previously had swam the second-best time (2:02.42) in program history at the 2007 Nike Cup before breaking today Jen McLaughlin's record time of 2:01.07, set in 2002. Newell now holds the top school marks in the 100 and 200 fly.
2007 All-American Sara Smith finished her junior season with a time of 49.64 in the 100 free for a 39th-place finish. On Thursday night, she placed 16th in the 50 free.
