McDonald earns second top-20 finish at NCAAs
Sophomore diver finishes 18th in 3-meter
March 28, 2008
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A day after becoming the first-ever H2Okie diver to score points at the NCAAs, Mikey McDonald (So., Annandale, Va.) had another good performance as he finished 18th in the three-meter, missing out on the last spot to the finals by 8.50 points, during day two of the 2008 Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the King County Aquatic Center outside of Seattle.
McDonald had placed 11th-overall in the 1-meter on Thursday after earning his way into the consolation final with a 15th-place finish in the prelim. However, the competition made fewer mistakes this time around as McDonald completed three strong dives of at least 60 points with a fourth one above 50. However, dives four and five were below 40, leading him to be one of the last divers looking in at 310.90. Still, McDonald's 18th-place finish in the 3m was the best-ever result by a Tech diver.
Tech returns to the pool one last time this season on Saturday for the final day of the NCAAs as Kaan Tayla (Sr., Ankara, Turkey) will look to score points in the 100-yard freestyle, while McDonald will compete in the platform.
Prelims begin at 3 p.m. (ET) with the finals set to start at 10 p.m. (ET). H2Okie fans can follow the action live at http://www.ncaa.com/swimming-mens/default.aspx?id=444.
